What does neurospicy mean?

A playful word for a neurodivergent brain, coined and used by neurodivergent people themselves. Here’s what it means, from a household with two of them.

Neurospicy is an informal word for being neurodivergent: having a brain that works differently from what’s considered typical. People use it for autism, ADHD, AuDHD (both at once), dyslexia, dyspraxia, Tourette’s and more. It’s the casual, affectionate cousin of “neurodivergent”, the way you’d describe yourself to a friend rather than on a form.

Where the word came from

It grew out of neurodivergent communities online and spread on social media in the early 2020s, alongside a wave of adults recognising themselves in videos about autism and ADHD. The “spicy” part is about a brain with more going on than the mild default: more intensity, more sensory input, more tabs open.

The older words it builds on are real terms with real histories. Neurodiversity was popularised by the autistic sociologist Judy Singer in the late 1990s, to describe the natural variety of human brains. Neurodivergent was coined soon after by the autistic activist Kassiane Asasumasu to describe an individual whose brain diverges from the typical.

Why some people love it (and some don’t)

For a lot of us, neurospicy is a relief: a way to talk about our brains with a grin instead of a clinical label. It makes room for people who are still figuring things out, and it signals “I’m one of you” in a single word.

Others find it too cute for something that can make life genuinely hard, or worry it makes autism and ADHD sound like a quirk. Both reactions are fair. That’s why our rule is simple: use it for yourself, and only use it for someone else if they use it first.

Using it kindly

Say it with people, not about them. Don’t use it to diagnose a coworker or explain away someone’s needs. If someone tells you they prefer “autistic” or “ADHD”, use their words. And if you love the word, wear it: our neurospicy collection was made for exactly that.

Quick answers

Is neurospicy offensive?

Most people who use it mean it warmly, about themselves. Some neurodivergent people find it trivialising or don’t like the “spicy” connotation. The safe rule: use it for yourself, and only for someone else if they use it too.

Is neurospicy the same as neurodivergent?

Roughly, yes. Neurodivergent is the standard term for a brain that works differently from the typical one; neurospicy is the casual, playful version of the same idea.

Do you need a diagnosis to call yourself neurospicy?

No one checks. Lots of people use the word while they’re still figuring things out, and many adults can’t easily get assessed. It’s a word about identity and community, not a medical label.
